Hoàng Hiệp

Hoàng Hiệp (real name Lưu Trần Nghiệp, b. 1 October, 1931 in An Giang province - 9 January 2013) was a Vietnamese songwriter and composer, one of the best known musicians of Vietnamese revolutionary music ("Red Music" or Nhạc đỏ). His songs frequently reflect upon changes within the Vietnamese as a people during 20th century, mixing romantic longing with heroic patriotism. Hoàng Hiệp was also well regarded for his work of setting music to poems, for example Ngọn đèn đứng gác (by poet Chính Hữu); Đất quê ta mênh mông (poet Dương Hương Ly); Trường Sơn Đông, Trường Sơn Tây & Tiểu đội xe không kính (poet Phạm Tiến Duật); Như lá (poet Lâm Thị Mỹ Dạ), Em vẫn đợi anh về (poet Lê Giang); Mùa chim én bay (poet Diệp Minh Tuyền)... His original composition Nhớ về Hà Nội is one of the greatest songs of contemporary Vietnamese music by the end of the 20th century. He has also composed for film and theater, and was the author behind various translations and textbooks on music and musical theory.
